Return Home
Nicknamed the ‘weeping prophet’, Jeremiah was called to deliver a tough message to the people of Judah and Jerusalem during the most terrifying period in their history.
After centuries of turning away from God and ignoring him, judgement is going to come in the form of the Babylonian army. Jeremiah warns that because of their unfaithfulness their city will become a ruin, the temple will be destroyed, and they will be taken into exile. And this is what happens. Jeremiah has a front row seat when Jerusalem eventually falls.
But despite this, at the heart of Jeremiah’s book, is hope. The repeated invitation is to return home by turning back to God. The central chapters focus on the new covenant God will bring about. He will send a righteous king who will forgive their sin and give them new hearts. He will bring them home from exile and into a new relationship with him.
Ultimately, Jeremiah shows us how much we need Jesus and the new covenant he made possible through his blood shed on the cross. Jesus is the righteous king we need, who can restore our relationship with God and give us new hearts. When we put our faith in him we return home.
