Elijah is surely one of God’s greatest prophets, a heroic figure who spoke courageously for the Lord in a land that didn’t want to listen. He called down fire from above, raised the dead to life and was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind before tasting death.
But Elijah is also remarkably human, combining bravery and boldness with fear and fragility. He ran from his enemies, knew great hunger and even prayed for his life to end, feeling alone as God’s last remaining prophet in a land where God seemed absent.
But God is never absent. Time and again in Elijah’s story, God reminds us that he never abandons his people. He cares tenderly for the weak and weary. He upholds justice against mighty but merciless men. He powerfully proclaims his majesty and might for all to see.
In an age which can feel so much like Elijah’s, where we may feel weak and lonely as Christians, Elijah’s story helps us bask in the great glory of a God who leaves us Never Alone.
