family devotions

Leading family devotions is never easy. However reading the Bible with your children and helping them to understand it’s truths is one of the most important jobs a parent can invest their time in.

The gospel writers give examples of how Jesus warmly welcomed children, even when he was busy and there were other demands on his time (Matt 19:14). In Psalm 127  wise King Solomon wrote that children ‘are a heritage from the Lord’ (v3). A heritage is something that outlasts us and lives on when we’ve gone. Our children are the true legacies we leave.

Solomon continues: ‘Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them’ (v4-5). Children are a blessing from God, because they are like arrows fired into the future. It’s the job of Christian parents – particularly Christian Fathers – to teach, train and pray for their children so that when they are released from home they’re able to fly straight and true.

This is why regular ‘Family Devotions’ are so important. Moses gave commands about how a God-centred family should operate: he told parents to: ‘Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.’ (Deuteronomy 6:5-7)
