history

Woodgreen Evangelical Church is an independent evangelical church. In 1995 we built a new facility in the heart of the Warndon Villages community to the Northern edge of Worcester and continue to use this building for Sunday services, childrens and youth work and community activities and events as well as other venues in the Warndon Villages area.

The church’s history can be traced back in Worcester for nearly 130 years with the first meeting held in the Passenger Guards Room at Shrub Hill Station in June 1882. The services that followed were arranged particularly for railwaymen because of the long and irregular hours they worked. However, the numbers attending grew and the congregation moved to the Workman’s Hall near the centre of Worcester City.

In 1896 a Mission Hall was built in East Street, Arboretum and was opened as a Railway Mission. This building was used by the church for 99 years until 1987 when we moved our Sunday morning activities to Rose Hill School, Warndon as the congregation had grown too large for the building at East Street.

We spent 8 very happy years there, meeting in the school hall and using the classrooms for the children.

In 1990, after much prayer and searching, the church embarked on a major project to build a new church on a plot of land purchased on Warndon Villages – a large new development of over 4,500 homes on the Northern edge of Worcester near Junction 6 of the M5 motorway. Building work began in 1992 and the first service was held on Sunday 23 July 1995.

In May 2000 we started an outreach project in the St. John’s area of Worcester by holding a satellite service on Sunday mornings in Manor Park School.

Manor Park Evangelical Church became independent on 1st April 2004 and 30 of our members transferred to this new Church.  To find out more about Manor Park which is now a thriving, Bible-centred and gospel focussed church, visit www.manorparkchurch.org .

In January 2008 a number of Members from Woodgreen left us to start up a morning satellite service in Perdiswell Primary School. This is now an established service with it’s own children and young people’s work.
